CHAPTER 13

***SUTTON***

Topher was always good at keeping the party going, but even he noticed the absence of Bethany and Hetty. Without a real fan of jump racing to back him up, Topher had to resort to his own expert opinion to convince his brothers.

“The best part about it is the niche. There is a select group of people that really love the sport and they are willing to travel. That’s why we’ll be able to bring them to Isabel and put Texas on the map for steeplechases,” he told them around the dining table.

Freddie came in from the kitchen where she had been helping Drake’s son get an extra round of dessert. “What did I miss?” she asked.

The men all shook their heads except for Topher. He smiled and launched his spiel right at her. “You love riding. Have you ever tried jumping? What would you think of seeing an entire race of horse riders who tackled the most amazing obstacles?”

Freddie looked at Drake’s stern face, but her smile didn’t fade. “I think it’s great that you’ve found something new and different to bring to town.”

“Always the diplomat,” Drake told her.

Sutton took that chance to jump in. “How about we move into the lounge? If Topher’s going to keep trying to convince us, at least we can sit in comfortable chairs.”

He intended to ditch the dinner party as they walked from the dining room across the hall to the lounge. Sutton knew it was his fault Bethany had looked so uncomfortable all through dinner. Usually, he helped her brave the Rolston gatherings because he knew just how overwhelming his older brothers could be. Not that he wasn’t still upset about her so casually mentioning her potential matrimony, but Sutton felt bad that he had let his friend down. Bethany looked so pale and sad as she slipped out of the dining room.

Sutton shooed everyone along the hallway, then turned to escape out the back door. He watched Dean lead the way into the lounge with Teddy close behind. His nephew was balancing a huge handful of cookies, with Freddie watching for any crumbs. Drake followed them closely behind, and everyone was almost inside when Theo turned to grin at him.

“Thinking of escaping too?” his second-eldest brother asked.

“I just thought I would check on the ladies. Maybe Hetty needs a coffee or something?” Sutton tried to sound innocent.

Theo stood aside and gestured for Sutton to lead the way into the lounge. “The last thing Hetty needs is another Rolston trying to take care of her needs. She barely tolerates me asking how her day is, much less someone trying to rope her back into a dinner party.”

“So, the honeymoon’s over?” Sutton tried to joke, staying in the hallway.

Theo gestured for him to enter the lounge again. “The honeymoon is not over; I just know Hetty. Kind of like I thought you knew Bethany.”

Sutton scowled at that. He decided his best course was to go into the lounge, distract Theo, and figure out another reason to escape.
